Why should I choose this program?
We could answer this question in a long essay – we love our program! We have an amazing and close-knit group of residents and staff that help build our residents into well-trained and confident Obstetrician/Gynecologists. You will see it all in Calgary – we are a big city with a large catchment and so have a large volume of patients treated here. There is early exposure to surgery with a well-supported first year program embedded within our residency. We offer exposure to all subspecialties and have four fellowship programs within our department. Our graduating residents are sought-after in fellowship programs across Canada.
So, how many of your residents go onto fellowship?
This varies year by year, but usually around half.
Are the stereotypes about Calgarian's true? Would I like living there?
Calgary is a city of over 1.2 million people – you will find what you are looking for here. This is a multicultural and vibrant city with festivals, amazing restaurants and beautiful river pathways. Calgary is a great place to raise a family – many of our residents have babies in residency and we love it!
Are there opportunities for research and/or medical education during residency?
Yes and yes! We have opportunities to take research electives to work on projects and there is plenty of formal and informal opportunities to teach medical students. Residents that love teaching will be busy!
Are your residents happy?
In a word, YES. Residency is hard and OBGYN residency is no joke. We try to promote and demonstrate physician wellness. We encourage advocacy as well as self-care and we support each other. The friends you make in residency are friends for life.
